Masala Chapathi / Roti

Masala chapathi is an easy to make recipe that can be eaten without any side dish. Adding garlic will make it very aromatic and split channa dhal makes it slightly crispy. Learnt this fantastic recipe from my MIL.



whole wheat flour 3 cups
coconut powder 1/2 cup
red chillies 8
garlic 2 cloves
split channa dal 1/2 cup
salt to taste
oil 3 tsp + extra oil to use while heating the roti
water 1 – 1 1/2 cups (as required)


In a blender make dry powder of split channa dhal, red chillies, garlic and coconut powder.
Mix whole wheat flour with above powder, salt, oil (3tsp) and water to make a stiff dough.
Make this dough in to 10-12 portions, make a ball and roll them to make a roti. (can make smaller or bigger roti as desired)
On a hot tava/griddle cook the roti well on both sides.
Enjoy the hot and tasty roti as is or can be eaten with raw tomato and onion on the side.
